During WW-II the US 4-th Marine Division trained near a cinder cone on the slopes of Haleakala prior to battles in four Pacific war theaters including Iwo Jima. According to Maui lore, the forested cinder cone became known as “Giggle Hill” after it became a popular site for liaisons between GI’s and local girls. Giggle Hill’s Coffee farm is located just a few yards from the camp’s mess tent where GI’s relaxed with a cup of java.
